Exciting news – Web of Truth is a Daphne Contest Finalist

Sometimes good news comes at the oddest times. I was getting ready to leave for a conference in San Antonio a couple of weeks ago when I got a voicemail from someone from the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery and Suspense. I’d entered Tangled Dreams and Web of Truth in it back in the spring and then promptly forgot about it. That’s really the best way to handle contests. Otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy wondering about them.

The voicemail said that she had a question about the book, so I called her back. She informed me that Web of Truth was a finalist. I refrained from exclaiming something inappropriate but enthusiastic, thanked her, and we said goodbye. Then I called Hubby so he’d be the first to know.

And then, in a demonstration of how compartmentalized my mind is, I sort of forgot about it once I got to Texas because I was heading into a day job-related conference where I was giving three talks, and I had a nonfiction book deadline. The contest final occurred to me a few times, mostly when I got emails about the Death by Chocolate party and award ceremony, and then again when I got home. I finally had a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate last night.

This is super exciting because the Daphne is a prestigious contest, and the competition is fierce. Even if Web of Truth doesn’t win – and yes, I hope it will so I can call myself an award-winning author – it being a finalist feels like a victory. It came out last autumn when I was in the midst of dealing with health stuff and an impending family death. I do love this book and its heroine, Morgan le Fay.

What am I going to do now? Probably forget about it until the contest results are released. Otherwise I’ll make myself too anxious wondering about it.
